Good Morning! Hope all is well in your world. Here is a yummy recipe for y'all to try-Au Gratin Potatoes. Made 2 batches of them yesterday-one with white cheddar cheese and the other with yellow (orange) cheddar cheese. Both are yummy, it is just a preference. So here you go-Enjoy and Happy Cooking!
Scalloped/Au Gratin Potatoes
4 large baking potatoes, peeled, thinly sliced, soaking in a bowl of cold water, until ready to use
1/4 cup butter (or margarine)
1/2 yellow onion, finely chopped
1 tablespoon all purpose flour
2 big pinches Kosher salt
1 pinch black or white pepper
1 to 2 shakes garlic powder
2 cups milk or half and half or 1 cup milk and 1 cup half and half-that is what I did to use up the half and half
2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese, white or yellow, shredded
1/4 cup Italian bread crumbs or crushed corn flakes
Preheat oven to 350. Grease an 8x8-inch baking dish. Melt butter over medium heat. Add onions and saute until the onions are soft and slightly translucent. Mix the flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder together and sprinkle over sauteed onions. Cook and stir flour and onion mixture for 1 to 2 minutes. Add milk and 1 1/2 cups shredded cheese. Continue stirring and cooking until all the cheese has melted and the mixture has thickened. remove from heat. Drain potatoes and lay the slices in a pretty pattern or dump them out in the prepared dish and spread them out. Pour cheese mixture over potatoes, making sure the sauce is evenly distributed. Place dish on a rimmed baking sheet and bake for 1 hour. Remove dish from oven and top with remaining shredded cheese and crumbs. Bake an additional 20 minutes. Remove from oven and let potatoes rest for 10 minutes.
Makes 6 servings.
